There was a series my wife listened to recently, I don't remember the name but basically in this society you basically choose to enter the dragon rider academy and will likely die from the training or be murdered by your peers before you can bond with your dragon. Long story short, the main heroine who was training her whole life to join the nerd division gets the rarest of dragons wanting to bond with her, and hes an uppity smug prick. I rather enjoyed that.
