It's featured prominently in Rosemi's latest outfit with that cool halo of thorns too. Thorns have connotations for danger and offense, but also a connotation for something more protective/defensive.
Maybe the magic could use rose-shaped staves as a focus instead of a 2D drawn symbol? You also have the option of getting some blood magic going with magicians poking themselves with rose thorns and such, everyone loves a nice blood sacrifice.
