>>5799976>So what exactly changes?this does a couple of things to the vtuber community
KAi-> created a miku-like live action vtuber. she was about prescripted clips uploaded to video hosting sites of her mostly goofing around in her 3d rig and singing, basically a quasi fake idol.
~this created a meta of Idol types trying to be vtubers which, despite what Holo-bros want to believe was sorta trashed by Nijisanji who introduced more humorous and adult vtuber streamer stuff. their act was much more twitch then niconico or youtube, but it made some money and was moderately successful, they also introduced gaming to the meta.
-Coco introduced her own meta to the mix... the simpbucks. Prior to coco japanese didn't really tip their vtubers much. It was westerners showering coco with cash that opened the eyes of the japanese vtubers and their fans to tipping content to show support. This helped the whole medium get more $$; so you could argue coco had the biggest impact on the global vtuber scene as she both opened the west to the vtuber "thing" and transformed the economics of it at the same time. Her content wasn't amazingly ground breaking (apart from the English outreach) she definitely played into the Nijisanji bottom-left meta hard.
Gura's meta ~ is actually a more traditional Idol style meta; at least as far as the Japanese are concerned. She's cute and smol which the nips love, and while she can be mischievous she's never mean, and she always tries to leave everyone smiling. She sings as well. She's also funny in a very... seiso manner. Yes she does make crude jokes or say curse words but she usually does it with a lot of innocence and innuendo which can be deniable.
I have Japanese friends from when I was serving in Okinawa, and they tell me Gura is "strong" because she gets huge numbers without being lewd, crude or vulgar, in short she's proof a vtuber can be immensely successful without going bottom left hard. sure there were successful vtubers who were seiso before gura, even in the nijisanji-coco meta, (a lot of them in hololive); but none of them were great successes, either financially or commercially as the idol bros didn't tip like the coco-niji meta fans did (fubuki, korone and pekora didn't see big $$ numbers till gura came along, though they were doing well sub wise).
As for the western market Gura introduced a successful "clean" entertainer to a market that doesn't usually reward clean entertainment on any level. Gamers don't watch streamers who are NICE. People don't watch singers who sing Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley, or Japanese City Pop (now there is a niche music type). Yet Gura is succeeding spectacularly as a gamer who sorta sucks at games, who's generally clean in content, and who sings very uncontroversial music (country roads? seriously? It's a great slice of red state Americana, but nothing I'd expect a popular youtuber to stream). She also is succeeding in the west using traditional Japanese Moe, something I thought would never happen, in the west a girl needs to show her thong and talk about slinging pussy to get traction; a wholesome young cartoon moe girl never should have taken off in the west. Finally she's made vtubers a much more mainstream thing in the west
