Kinda calls back to why Magni seems to like Axel a lot. Axel's been through a lot too but the light in his eyes are still there, y'know? To someone as jaded as him, it's like you wanna keep them and that optimism of theirs safe. It's kinda like that urge to protect goes both ways.
