Never pick from the design sheet, always pick from good fan art instead.
An easy trick that will improve your coloring inmediately is for example to pick up the colors and then add an orange or blue layer on top of them at 10% transparency (depending on either you want a warm or a cool picture) and pick those resulting colors instead, it will give the whole image color consistency: most digital artists already do this.
