I hate Sakura but Nerissa is right that this idea that "Kishimoto didn't intend for Sakura to be important" is cope. She is one of the 3 members of team 7, she was supposed to replace Tsunade like Naruto did with Jiraiya and Sasuke with Orochimaru, she was the main love interest at the beginning of the show, she had her arc during the war about trying to keep up with Naruto and Sasuke, but Kishimoto clearly didn't know what he was doing.
