Jesus' whole thing is the spirit of the law but the most imperative thing is spreading his word - in modern times obviously giving up all of your possessions and money to others and becoming a homeless wanderer would literally make it harder to spread his word, not easier, and therefore it's very unlikely that that's what he meant
