When Gura exploded in popularity I was inundated with shark girl content on my feed, but I had no interest in it and just kept scrolling past it all for months. I didn't know what vtubers were and I didn't care. On Twitter I eventually saw a video someone uploaded of Gura singing karaoke, I think it was Plastic Love outro, and it was interspersed with video footage of a real guy in a suit and tie frantically typing on his keyboard, and it was cutting to the textbox of his words going GO GURA WE LOVE YOU LETS GOOO and then back to his face where he looked serious and sweating. I think this video was trying to meme one specific twitter user but I can't remember who it was or who it was targeting, but that video basically seeded my mind the idea of being a fan, teaching me how to be a fan without me knowing it. And Gura's singing voice was incredible, the little adlib tweaks and ornamentation she did do the melody was fantastic. And then a week or so later, I saw yet more shark girl content somewhere, and this was a trigger for me to actually google shark girl and find out what it was, and I clicked on the first Gura stream I saw which was some karaoke stream, and I was blown away by how the tracklist was actually good and the same stuff I listen to and not complete trash, and then I watched a minecraft stream where she was goofing around with Watson and the rest his history. I'm probably the exact median casual vtuber fan.
