I think it would be far easier to write a short gag-like story than something more akin to a novel. I think if we're just starting out we shouldn't try to take it too seriously, and most people can relate to comedy.
Several people have also pitched the idea of episodic stories that might better cater to differences in writing styles and tastes, allowing each anon contribute to whatever tickles their fancy more, they can even be self-contained.
