Giving more sympathetic non-human characters human features is a common trick, helps with both displaying emotions (reptiles don't exactly have capacity to do that through facial expressions in a meaningful capacity even when they have lips) and letting the audience connect with them, it's also why you don't often see less human aliens as major characters unless they are the bad guys or resemble we're familiar with like dogs
