No one likes to admit it, and survivorship bias distorts perception of the numbers, but it's very easy to fall through the cracks in society; ie. very few people ever escape the social class, let alone circumstances of their birth, and even something mild like being an introvert reduces your potential for success.
I suspect Marine had all the genetic markers for greatness but struggled with environmental ones.
