A man wiling to threaten suicide during a hostage negotiation is more dangerous than a man who just takes a hostage because violence is an ends rather than a means for that person and they can lash out in any direction at a whim. Hostage negotiators aren't 4chan posters either. They're not going to say "well, the guy took and hostage and is threatening to shoot himself so we'll just wait until he does it."
It can also be seen as a depression metaphor. We shackle ourselves to others in harmful ways when the darker thoughts take hold of us. We take a hostage (willingly or unwillingly) when we take ourselves hostage. This second half is a lot more subtle. There's a few other (probably pretentious) interpretations but to call the composition lazy or confusing is not on the piece.
