Your oshi is like the virtual manifestation of everything you hold dear in this world, like goodness concentrated and given a voice. You see something divine in your Oshi, when the human world is so corrupt, you need something that is good and pure. She/He is a source of strength and replenishment for Your soul.
It's a fulfilment of a spiritual need. As you instinctively recognize, there may be something wrong with this. The argument is *NOT* that the Oshi "doesn't really exist, it is just 2D model and rigging artfully rendered to a digital monitor blah blah", you could also say "God or spirits are not part of physical reality".
The problem is that there is a fallible human being behind the avatar, so if they ever trip up, or reveal some flaw or impurity, that one thing that sustained your world view will come crashing down and you will lose your shit like a gachikoi, a fallen disciple.
