My two biggest issues with 3D sonic games are summarized in this image:
1) the perspective giving the illusion that you are moving slower than you actually are. The 2D games having a limited side view "feel" faster since the environment passes by so quickly despite being slower than the 3D games
2) More linearity. There were certainly plenty of linear segments in 2D sonic but i feel like the design of 3D sonic has always had more of these long linear pathways
To remedy these issues, I feel like pulling the camera in really close to where your character takes up 30%-40% of the screen would make it so that you get a greater sense of how fast you are going and make your placement in the 3D environment feel more deliberate
