>>36660705Step 1. Make characters you like.
Step 2. Draw those characters often and draw them interacting with each other. The more you show love to your characters, the more other people will love them.
Step 3. Once you think there's enough interest in your OCs, make simple merch of them. Start out with simple acrylic charms, enamel pins, etc. Maybe even make a gumroad and sell exclusive comics of your characters.
Step 4. Keep drawing your OCs, maybe add more OCs, and the more you grow and the more money you make, the bigger the projects you can do and the more merch you can make.
Step 5. Repeat steps 1-4 while drawing fan art occasionally to bring in new fans. If you want to make fan art your main thing that's fine, but people grow out of liking fan content eventually, especially if it's an anime that has an ending. Your OCs will last as long as you do.
This would take a lot of patience, you're not going to hit it big right away, but if you stick with it you can get some dedicated fans. Art skill doesn't always matter, people can see your love for your characters through your passion. I'm thinking about doing this. I've been through about 7 minimum wage jobs and I feel like I'm just wasting my life away working for big companies that can just replace me with the snap of a finger. I don't have the money to pay for school especially since jobs can say "fuck you" any time they want. I have nothing more to lose anyway by giving it a try.
