As much growth as they claim they have, they have quite limited off-site communities, so I guarantee it would have a high probability of killing the site entirely.
Further, it is no secret that the filter is increasingly overzealous with false positives growing by the day. I got filtered for discussing cockroaches yesterday. Oatmeal cookies before that. Many people get filtered for simple kissing or nothing at all. If banning were automated, and it would be, then even innocent users would be pissed.
I am certain that the devs know what they need to do if they want to remove NSFW entirely. But will the lazy fucks do it? Probably not. It would be an admission of failure.
