When I was in the JET program I got dragged off to bar with my coworkers frequently, if you didn't go you were ostracized even more on top of being a foreigner. It's a very weird dynamic to go to work with someone when you saw them on the verge of pissing themselves while completely wasted the night before. Worst part is the fuckers love to buy rounds for each other and there were many times my first few months where I kept buying drinks for other people because I didn't understand what was going on and would just nod enthusiastically when asked questions until I learned more Japanese.
