The newcomer or outsider to vtubers often perceives the appeal of the girls to be their distance from the 3D female. It's their lack of disagreeableness and dedication to playing a character that makes them popular, they reason.
That's not really true, though. The vtuber serves as a virtual cabaret girl, a substitute to a real woman that is within the average man's grasp. For this reason, it is necessary that they feel attainable, and for that to be achieved they must also feel sufficiently real.
FWMC do not feel real. They are talented girls, very in sync, very dedicated to their craft, but they're about as fake and sanitized as a vtuber can get.
You look at the most popular JP vtubers and more often than not it's the loud, boisterous girls who are somewhat rough around the edges that get popular. Marine, for example, isn't what you'd expect the average vtuber fan to be interested in. She's older, she's a fujo, she's a pervert. She's not a pure yamato nadeshiko by any means. But she's a great conversationalist, she's talented and she feels real.
FWMC have their charms but their act is a natural filter for many for this reason.
