>>99466942 Chapter 1: Riichi Section
Once you remember this yaku, you'll have even more fun playing!
Lesson 1: Learn Only Two Yaku: Riichi and Yakuhai.
You, who have picked up this book, must be thinking that mahjong seems interesting and you’d like to try playing it yourself. Perhaps you’ve already looked at some beginner books or websites for beginners. The first major hurdle you encounter there is the List of Yakus, a section brimming with content. You might feel overwhelmed thinking, Do I really need to memorize so many yaku to play mahjong! and some might even give up on learning them.
However, you don’t actually need to memorize all the yaku to enjoy playing mahjong sufficiently.
For example, in sumo wrestling, there are 82 recognized winning techniques. This number is much greater than the number of hands in mahjong. However, not all of these techniques are used equally in actual matches. In fact, over 50% of matches are decided by just two techniques: the push-out and the force-out. There are also rare techniques that might only appear once in ten years, and even if you remember them, you might never get a chance to use them in your lifetime.
