I think they absolutely wanted her for more than just who she was but also because they wanted to keep her out out of trouble and keep her health and sane. The way they talk about what a great person she is, like mel saying she's near and dear to her heart, it would make sense given the hate mel used to recieve so much of in the early days, and probably still gets.
