In many instances, smaller tribes will band together to take on a much fiercer opponent, who will often times be oblivious to their nature, by infiltrating their domains and attempt to cause a civil war or schisms within the dominant group. The less intelliigent ones that are a part of the bigger group may join in these tribalistic tendencies without really being aware that they're being played. You see this in full display here and in other real life venues (US politics, team sports etc.)
