His parents move around a lot and he's just transferred to a new school.
He's worried because he's arrived late for class (his parents were neglectful which is part of why he became a mafia later you'll see) and it's his first day but as he's running to the front gate he sees a nerdy kid with glasses (IKE EVELAND) is standing there sheepishly deciding whether or not he should go in.
He says hi and talks to him a bit and Ike reveals that he's scared of going to school because bad things happen there. Luca laughs it off and says there's no way school could be bad it's a fun place to hang out with your friends.
They both go in and Ike gets told off by the teacher for making Luca (the new student) late for his first day of class. He's told to go wait outside Japanese style with holding the bucket of water and all that and everyone laughs at him because he's too scrawny and he never manages to actually hold it for the whole time. Luca says that since he was late he should go wait outside too and spends some more time with Ike.
The first few days at school end up kind of normal like that but since Luca noticed that Ike keeps showing up late he starts waiting for Ike to show up and being late every day too so he can wait outside in the hall with him.
After awhile of this a few of the other boys in Luca's class ask him why he keeps hanging out with the 4-eyes and telling him that he'd be better off just showing up on time which Luca brushes off.
One day Luca's eating lunch with Ike and after noticing that one again Ike isn't finishing his meal he asks why and Ike responds by saying that he's just not hungry, but it almost looks like he's in pain whenever he takes a bite.
During all of this at the end of the school day Luca would always head home right away since he had to clean the house before his parents got home, while Ike would always say he needs to stay behind for a bit to finish some work, but one day when he's heading home Luca notices that he forgot his homework and he heads back to school.
It's around 8:30PM and getting pretty late but he notices that the lights in one of the classrooms are on.
He peeks inside and sees the group of boys are kicking Ike, who's laying stripped on the floor, with his chest covered in bruises.
Luca gets angry and tries to fight them to help Ike but he immediately gets knocked down by one of the bigger boys and the rest of them start beating on him too (while Ike cries and begs them to stop).
After about an hour of this the boys leave and Ike apologizes to Luca (I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm so sorry Luca....) and explains that this has been happening for months now and that it was all his (Ike's) fault.
The next day Luca notices that Ike isn't at school and he decides to tell the teacher about what happened. The teacher ends up not believing him (you can say that the bully kids came from an influential family here!) and tells his parents that ever since Luca's arrived he's been a problem child who's never on time and hangs out with the school delinquent. Luca protests but his parents believe the teacher and force him to apologize to the bullies, which he refuses to do. Because of this, they end up sending him to some kind of juvy or stricter school to try and correct his personality. It's here that Luca realizes that being strong isn't enough and what's real strength is numbers, and he decides that the point of strength is to protect the people he cares about, his real family (this is his mafia creation origin arc).
From here write a bit about how he formed the mafia with some kids of his school/juvy being the first members of his 'family'.
Then when he returned back to the old school he sees that Ike had already left and nobody knew where he went. He then goes after the bullies one at a time outside of school hours with help from his 'family' and tries to get them to tell him what they did and where Ike went but nobody knows since nobody had seen him since the day Luca got beat up.
Continue at this and make Luca have a huge complex about protecting his 'family' because he failed to protect Ike.
Then in the future (flash forward) when he's an adult he's leaving a hat store (he bought his hat here and yes this is a Durarara reference) when sees some punk newbies (2 or 3) from another crime family are trying to mug some nerdy-looking civvy in his territory. They pull the guy into a back alley and Luca follows to confront them.
As they're asking the guy for money Luca attacks them, asks them if they know whose territory this is (DO YOU KNOW WHOSE TERRITORY THIS IS? HUH? YOU DUMB PUNKS!?) and after being beat up they run away.
He leans down to pick up his hat that had fallen off of his head during the fight and the the civvy says "thank you". Luca looks up not really caring much and says "don't worry about i-" but then notices! It's Ike! IKE EVELAND!
The boy he failed to protect!
"IKE!" he shouts. "Is that you?".
