I think that's how he saw himself and projected it onto others with his dumb games, but if he was actually Death, he would have killed that bird, he wouldn't have been visibly shaken by a meek widowing Carla Jean calling him on his bullshit, and he wouldn't have gotten wrecked by a freak car accident in the end. He had a reputation as some unstoppable force, but in the end, he was just a capable dude with delusions of grandeur.
