So if I (and a bunch of other people) think people are going to start buying this coin for 'reasons' then its price goes up. Even if its worthless, if I can buy some tokens for $10, and sell it a few weeks later for $100. I don't give a shit what its actual worth is, I still made $90.
And that's basically what all crypto is, people want it so the price goes up so people sell it for more and make tons of money. People see others making tons of money so they jump in on the market too. The biggest appeal technically of crypto is that there's an authenticity to its existence and trade so you can't just make more out of nothing like a country can. But as to what's the worth its worth what people want it to be worth.
tldr - "coins" are priced based on desire to have them, investing in them is based on betting that people will desire to have them
