Just looking now, you can still find private rooms from like the 6th to 14th for about $300-450, and in decent areas near stations. Being able to put down bookings with free cancellations makes it easy to have a tentative plan and then jump to a better deal. Just make sure you don't book an 8 man dormitory by accident.
