Unless it's a newfangled electric iPad on wheels, if it runs after a jump start, popping the clutch, or leaving the battery connected to something else it's probably not that bad.
If the starter was shot it wouldn't turn over after charging the battery. Usually, a shot alternator shows up as the battery light coming on and your car will give up while you're driving in the worst case. So I'd put my money on dropping a battery in it, tightening down the leads, and see if it's okay.
