theres a really cool 19th century statue (Emmanuel Fremiet - Orangutan Strangling a Borneo Savage - 1895) of a monkey attacking a woman during the period where Europeans were first really discovering/looking into primates. them looking vaguely human was not lost on them and they called them demonic a few times in descriptions. i think they encountered a gorilla that beat its chest at them (and other primates), which granted is pretty scary. explains the violent nature of the statue.
