>>32367723The grocery store I most often use has locks and chains on their carts. You put a quarter into the lock to unlock it, then when you're done with the cart, you lock it up again to get your quarter back.
Some people will still leave their carts strewn about in the parking lot. Maybe it already had a quarter in it, maybe they don't care about losing a quarter, maybe they somehow got a cart that was unlocked without a quarter in it. If they're on my way while I bring my own cart back, I'll grab them and net an extra quarter or two.
The most baffling thing is when people bring their cart to the cart corral, but STILL don't properly put the cart away and get the quarter. They'll just roll the cart in haphardly, not docking it with the other carts. On the rare occasion I'll see a cart nestled in with the others but not actually linked, leaving the quarter in the lock. Why? Whatever, free quarters for me.
