Some guys/girls really like romance and perfer it over self-inserting, but some guys/girls just really like self-inserting and not romance. There's a reason fujoshi and yumejoshi are considered seperate online (even if there is some overlap). I feel like that difference should be made with guys too.
I personally do see romance being good in some situations, but I've never really gotten the "fly-on-the-wall" mentality that some yurifags/fujoshi have with regards to their ships. I've always preferred self-inserting just cuz I'm a very lonely guy and like to have something to make up for my lack of love life, or otherwise to just fill up the empty void where I want to pour out my love to somebody.
Honestly, it's really just that I have a lot of excess individual care that I want to put towards someone romantically, and having a person to self-insert into in fiction helps get some of that frustration out.
