Medieval total war wasn't that great of a setting, although there was some amount of low level conflict, it wasn't at a large scale. Like it was just a few guys fighting over castles and marriages. Its best experienced in a game like Crusader Kings.
I'd much rather have seen a remake of Empire total war, or more ideally, the 1500s-1700s when large nation states started appearing and more interesting naval, and siege warfare, and global colonization and interactions.
