if you like mysteries the common recommendations are higurashi, umineko, ever17
the former two are good but also extremely long so you have to really commit, and of the two higurashi is more accessible
ever17 has more valleys but its climactic peak is worth the sale price alone
Kara no Shoujo is my personal favorite mystery vn though, and it got a new localization recently so i'd go with that
saya no uta is a popular horror pick but i dont particularly care for it, however its brief length make it a good babby's first vn
if you want to see DDLC but not shit then You, Me, and Her AKA ToToNo is really good
if you can stomach stuff that has a lot of (thematically important) rape then forest, wonderful everyday, and tsui no sora remake are good picks, but again, there's a lot of rape
if you prefer more traditional romance i'm afraid i'm not as knowledgeable on the subject but there's a lot of good ones out there
also, avoid anyone trying to sell you on fate, it is absolute ass
if you can stomach more twisted storylines
