It's just all up to the matchmaking and whether it's decided for you to win that round or to lose, since that's how it works. Selen was stuck without kills for what, half an hour at least? She was essentially banging her head against the EOMM-wall, pointlessly trying to win when the matchmaking system meant for her to lose.
The serious, good fight she had right after those losses is what the system gave her as a sort of reward after the defeats. Something that is meant to feel like a greater victory after that long run of losses. Something that's taking advantage of dopaminergic rewards to keep people playing the game.
The entire system is rigged. The whole Apex kill race is a joke.
