You can go full autismo mode reading the extra Higurashi arcs in between the main 8 like pic related shows but I would recommend saving yourself the headache and just reading them after the original story (if you even care enough to do it in the first place, they technically aren't canon)
The Higurashi anime is pretty good but even as long as it is, it leaves out 90% of the details and the VN is fucking incredible so I would recommend watching it after. The manga is good too. Don't watch the 2020 not-reboot, it's pretty much universally hated and retroactively ruins the entire story. The Umineko anime is also shit, I became a Pomu anti the day I learned she watched it instead of reading it
