"were" is written similarly to "mere" and "meme", but rhymes with "fur", "per", and "sir" (vowel+r ending) instead. So, it should be written as "wer".
"where" and "there" have the same ending as "were", but rhyme with "care", "stare", "bare". So, they should be written as "whare" and "thare" instead.
"are" has the same problem as the above two words. Its spelling reflects the Scandinavian pronunciation, but it should be just "ar".
For what purpose do words like "library" end a Y when they go back to the original Anglo-norman/French spelling in their plural forms anyway (libraries)? It should just be written as "librarie" in all cases.
Literally spelling mistakes that stuck because nobody wants to do anything about them. "Scythe" is written as it is because they thought it's a Greek word when it is a native English one. It should've been "sithe"
