Switching alt-modes for a new environment is a common occurrence in Transformers series, including the series that Lumi watched. Here's Bumblebee's original alt-mode, before he came to Earth and switched to a VW Beetle.
Alt-mode suitability comes up from time to time. Some characters are forced to take alt-modes that are terrible matches for them. Broadside triplechanges from robot to fighter jet to aircraft carrier, but he's both afraid of heights and gets seasick. In one comic series that uses the "energy ball" nature of the Transformers, a pair of assassins swap out their soul balls into borrowed bodies. Except, they borrowed flying bodies, and they're terrible at flying.
