For me Hololive EN streams are clip or vod material. I don't find any of their mainline girls interesting enough to want to be there when they're live, especially because chat interaction doesn't even matter because of the speed. There's no functional difference between watching a vod and watching live. Smaller vtuber chats feel more comfortable and organic to me and I honestly don't care about numbers, some of my favourites are 2views.
As for the brand recognition, I think that's a natural consequence of most vtuber fans not really searching for a streamer to watch. That's more of a /vt/ approach, your average viewer just sees an ad or a suggestes video and clicks it. Keeping them around is a different matter altogether.
To be completely honest I feel like I can't exactly knock people who only follow a specific brand's streamers since I technically hako-oshi the entire collection of chuubas formerly associated with Tsunderia.
