The corporate vtubers were boring as fuck and there weren't nearly as many good japanese indies as there are active right now. Even early Nijisanji got a lot better through 2019.
The western fanbase grew to be a lot more moronic than I could have ever imagined but that's a given in any circumstance. You're awfully pessimistic if you look at them as a measure of the state of virtual youtubers as a whole.
