Anime being mainstream has been a real double edged sword it feels like. There's a lotta fake weebs who just watch fotm action series and any given anime con or event will be dominated by those people and if you leak your power level too much they get creeped out. It's hard making weeb friends when most of them aren't watching seasonal anime or downloading BD's of classic shows from older seasons and just post memes all day. Feels bad...
Some of my friends are really into manga more than I am so I usually listen to their recs and just binge finished series like you say. Or if a manga has good art that might be enough to get me into it just from an image on /a/.
