To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand American Football. The gameplay is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical statistics most of the playcalling will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also formations and player changes, which is deftly woven into the game- the coach's personal philosophy draws heavily from the deep history of the game from the last 100 years, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of this game, to realise that they're not just professionals- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike American Football truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Dennis Green's existential catchphrase "They are, who they thought they were," which itself is a cryptic reference to the Arizona Cardinal's loss to the Chicago Bears. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Tom Brady's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them.
