In the LotR books, Denethor is a good guy, competent and kingly, not like how he's portrayed in the movies. It's made much more clear that the rrats he read on /palantir/ drove him to depression. In fact, Faramir is said to be exactly like Denethor, more calm and calculating than the charismatic Boromir, which is why Denethor tended to be more critical of Faramir since he saw himself in his son.
