Is food a utility? Then what is cuisine? Can a chef take pride in his work and recipes? Can a farmer take pride in the ingredients he produces for the chef? Can a smith take pride in a knife he makes? Does a good chef, a good farmer, and a good smith not produce 'art'? Is art not food for the soul?
You can utilise art to measure the spirit of the time, to ponder a question it evokes, to liven up your home and decorate your environment digital or analog, or to make a profit. Art is a means for the beholder to explore his own sense of self, and an artist can also utilise it to explore his own desires, quality and horizon.
Art has many functions, art has many facets, art is luxury... Artists, definitely the mediocre ones, are going to be replaced by computers. Just like computers will eventually replace everyone. Just like the printing press replaced monks painstakingly rewriting documents and literature, so will the computer replace people that doodle.
Art is a utility.
