Ask. Just ask. Don't be obnoxious, don't be a twat. Do ask. There is nothing to lose. You get a quick polite excuse? Whatever. No change in status quo. They say yes? Positive shift in status quo. It costs them nothing. Someone gave them a chance once too. They won't care. So just do it.
