I was unable to tell you what a verb was before I started learning my secondary language in my teenage years -- by the time I finished highschool I knew far more about languages than the average American -- perhaps even the average world citizen, given it was more study than acquisition.
The things that did for my mind cannot be understated. I cannot imagine learning a language with my pre-highschool brain.
You should feel bad for her, it's going to be a massive uphill battle for her as her formative years are mostly past. But it's still possible -- she'll just have to try new methods and new teachers.
