If you can't, then having a not hated main character is the actual prerequisite for a game, and literally nothing else matters.
There are more well received games that weren't fun, that had likeable characters, than games that were fun with hated characters (being zero games).
Case in point is visual novels, there is literally no gameplay yet they are better received than YIIK. Being fun isn't a prerequisite.
