The world is a FUCK, and it's destined to be a FUCK, but Gwyn was afraid of letting this happen and tried to delay or postpone the inevitable leading to an even more fucked up world. Now that everything is in decay, the world is perishing and slowly losing it's fire the undead are tricked and bolstened into undergoing this massive quest reuining the lord's souls to be able to defeat Gwyn and link the fire once more(which would inadvertedly lead to the age of darkness because all the gods are out of the way) or leave the world to darkness immediately.
Its all about persevering in this world that is dead and falling apart, of great kingdoms that have come and went. Its a very great analogy of the modern times too.
