When I was a kid I could distract myself by literally superimposing my imagination on top of my classroom, like imagining a cartoon character like Buzz Lightyear from the TV show would crash through the roof and be fighting aliens in class, to the point where I could see them as vividly as reality in my mind's eye.
I'd also rewatch the Shrek 2 American Idol DVD special segment in my own head, but that may be less "mind's eye" focused and more memorization.
