3 and 5 are mandatory. Switch version of 3 is the best one because it adds Free Style.
4 is okay.
DmC is better than 2, and is a nice time capsule of cringe from that era, but it's worse than 3/4/5 and was an attempted reboot, so it's skippable. Play Definitive Edition if you don't want to kill yourself.
2 is so bad that Itsuno successfully lobbied to be allowed to make DMC3 so that he wouldn't become "The Guy That Made DMC2". Never play 2.
