However, Since I live in rural coastal America in an area that experiences winter, having a generator is essential to keep your house warm enough so that pipes don't freeze over when you lose power for 3 days in subzero temperatures. (Remember how retards were literally dying in Texas a few years ago? If they had generators they'd have been fine.) Also since I live on the waterfront, I regularly get hit by hurricanes in the summer, and sometimes it takes a day or two for the power to get back on.
Most generators only last about 12 hours per 5 gallons, but during an extended outage, $15 of gas to turn your fridge and hot water back on is easily worth it. Plus you can plug in your phone and PC, cook food, etc.
