To save the lives of the prisoners, the Germans began migrating them West, into the core of Germany. These migrations involved long trips overland, since the trains were often being bombed and strafed by the Americans.
Today those marches are called "death marches" in order to imply some kind of homicidal intent.
When all those prisoners came into the Western camps, they overloaded the supplies of the camps. The Americans were also bombing all the supply lines. People began starving to death. That's why there's lots of pictures of skinny jewish prisoners after the war.
Most of those pictures come from Bergen-Belsen, where the Allies bombed the power plant that drove the clean water supply. The entire camp was forced to drink sewer water and contracted Typhoid Fever. Not to mention they couldn't shower and contracted Typhus from the lice. The Belsen barracks were actually burned down after the war because they were so infested with Typhus carrying lice.
Camp logs report a massive spike in deaths at the end of the war, when the American bombing campaign was in full force.
The british airforce actually directly bombed the Nordhausen camp, and used the photos of blown-apart prisoners as evidence of German atrocities.
All of this death and suffering was caused by the Americna bombing campaign and they blamed it all on the Germans. You probably saw those shock-images in school? They even strafed trains full of prisoners and then blamed those deaths on Germans!
