The 2025 Sumo Hatsu Basho has concluded.
Going into Day 15 of the tournament, maegashira #3 man defeated tournament leader Kinbozan (Maegashira #14), giving them equal scores of 12 wins and 3 losses. Meanwhile, ozeki Hoshoryu defeated ozeki Kotozakura to earn himself a score of 12-3, forcing a 3-way playoff. Hoshoryu proceeded to clinch the Emperor's Cup (his second overall) by defeating Oho and Kinbozan in back-to-back matches. This yusho victory, combined with him being the last tournament's runner-up, could be grounds for promotion to sumo's highest rank of yokozuna.
In other news, the lone yokozuna Terunofuji announced his retirement, citing his much publicized health woes. He will remain in sumo as a stablemaster under his own name, which he is entitled to do for 5 years as a yokozuna.
